Thanks to everyone who ran/walked/donated/worked, both yesterday and today, it is such a humbling day to see what people are made of. Martha, Cheryl; you both look great in the paper, along with an inspirational article. It made my day. By the way, I didn't know that our husband's ran. Do you call that pace that they are dragged along at running?? Ha :) Great job at the Boston Marathon to yourself and the rest of the GACer's who ran... Kitty, I assume you are very happy with your sub-four time???

I spend a lot of time with a few of your club members at Bear Mountain yesterday in the 50 mile event - fantastic crew of people you have in your club. Great to spend the time with the G.A.C. crew out there...thanks for letting me tag along.

Northface, nobody finished the fifty mile from gac. Only 18 out of 106 total finished the 50m. Yep. Deb finished the 1/2 marathon. Carol O'Hear however got 5th overall 50m. House and Randy finished the 50K . So I guess eveyone has a new club record. The mood is good.

I was with Master D. on Saturday...I hung out with him at Salem Hosp., where his mom was having another back surgery. She is o.k., but just another thing he has to deal with. Pete had four big chemo treatments scheduled: 2 down 2 to go. He then waits 3 weeks and hits it again...the treatments will not be as intense, but more frequently. Bottom line is he's the Master D! He's tough as nails and maintains a great atttitude!

Saw the following message on the L Street Running Club forum. Thought some of you might enjoy it, if were weren't already aware of it. ******************************************* For anyone who doesn't have a GPS to check their mileage or plan out routes-- A fellow runner tipped me off to this handy, FREE tool on line. It's a little tricky at first to navigate, but the mileage it gives is nearly as accurate as Owen Judge. (Nothing can truly match to Owen's knowledge of streets and distances, but this is pretty good.) You can also save, share and rate routes. The website address is mapmyrun.com

I just looked at the VT100 entrants list posted yesterday (1/28), and I almost spewed my luncheon beverage all over my monitor when I read "Washburn Jeff Newbury MA." Can it really be true?? As one of the thousands (yes!) who have benefited from Wash's contributions to ultrarunning over the years, I'd be thrilled if it was. On a related note, best wishes for recovery to all GAC members and their families who have had to deal with health issues recently. --Chris (from Needham, not NH)

"Who is Master D?" you might ask. He is Pete Devereaux. He's one of the guys who made the GAC the GAC. He was one of our first ultra guys; he used to run trail runs in work boots...just because; he'd bike to NH on a whim; he's a golden gloves boxer; and a former Marine. He is the toughest dude I know. Master D. is also one of the kindest and funniest people I know. If you have ever put on a GAC singlet, you can thank Master D. Please think of him in your prayers.

What a Great Party! So many friends, more than 80, and how did you get them there? Ski friends, my kids, hiking friends from the Y, Joan from Maine and of course the GAC -- including the Washman. Marigold + I have just finished going through all the cards and presents and we are delighted! We will eat out for weeks from the Hardcover to Dunkin Donuts. Bottles of fine wines to drink and gelogical maps to guide me. My tennis will surely improve with a fine new shirt and I won't fall getting there with my pro Yaktrax. Several good books to read and I may win millions with the many lottery tickets. I can keep track of the $ with the 144 short pencils. It was a wonderful poem read by Emma + the Walsh kids -- I wonder who wrote it? I want to thank all who helped set this all up -- Vicki and I am sure others, but especially thank Darlene -- Darlene you are so great! Thanks to all who came and ---- It is great to be 80!

Hi Tom & Lori, thanks for the kind words, Leedennis@aol.com. Hey Jeff, fyi, the water was not frozen and there were no arrests for illegal running in North Adams. Bob Dion is proud of his Fat Ass, the run that is, and puts on a nice event like GAC. Some GAC folks know Bob; Tom mentioned to me that Bob had a serious heart event last year but he looked well and ran a few laps. Hope to bop over this Saturday, regards to all and take good care.

We ran together the final 16 miles, you were the wind at our backs that carried us to the finish line. Thanks for a great run, Lee. I told Lori, the lady who I'm a caregiver for, about the kindred spirit I ran with. As I told you, she's a poet and would like to write a poem for you. Maybe you can post your e-mail address so I can send it your way. Mine is Thomas51752@msn.com

Apparently many of us did not know about Gary until Lois posted yesterday. I many not have the facts exactly correct but about six days ago Gary went to the ER with extreme chills, fever and rapid heart beat. He was sent home but Lois took him back some hours later and he was admitted. He has had many tests that were all negative. The docs were thinking some sort of infection but have taken him off antibiotics and now are thinking a severe med reaction may be the cause of all of this. Gary still had a heart rate of 150 yesterday so they finally decided to give him a med to slow the heart. The body thinks it has been running nonstop for a week. He has a rash, chest pain, chills to hot flashes. He seems to really enjoy company and can laugh through the discomfort. Troy is here and Bonnie is back from her travels both expecting a different kind of holiday. Gary would describe what is going on in much more colorful terms like %#%%#@@*#@#&#!

Ok, I've obviously missed something here but I don't see any original posting of what happened to Gary? Lois, please update and tell him "I LOVE HIM!' Merry Christmas to all of you and wishing for the best. Sandy

Merry Christmas all!  Just a quick update to say Gary has been moved from room 241 to 245 in case you want to swing by. :)

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE. I just want to give you an update on Gary. He is still in Anna Jaques hospital and continues to have a rapid heart rate. He was on the 3rd floor but is now back on the second floor in room 241. I know he would appreciate a call for a quick pick me up.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a 50mile trail race that I could run, after the Boston Marathon in (April)? Or if there are any 50miler's not too close to April? Possibly early March ? I feel like I missed the boat, when I didn't run the full 50miles at Stonecat. thanks, Karen

Jason. Thank you for sharing that very inspiring email from Wash. Wash. Your message really struck home. Your message put in words what I had always felt but could never find the words for. Thank you guys for inspiring me. Looking forward to a fantastic year running with both of you.

Dug this up from when I asked Washburn why one runs a Ultra back many years ago. Wash thanks for all you have done for me. Merry Christmas All! Jason, "I wish I could give you a good answer but I can't. I started running, period, because I saw the Western States 100 on ABC's Wide World of Sports and thought that I would like to do that. I started running in 1982 and ran my first ultra in 1984 (Heritage 50 mile in North Adams, MA) and my second one a year later (Maine 50 mile). The next year I started doing them regularly. In 1988, I finally ran and finished Western States. I really don't care that much for running but do like to keep myself in good enough shape to do the things that I do like. I also like to compete and to test my limits. Ultrarunning does allow me to test those limits. If there wasn't a better than average chance of failure, I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. Overcoming failure, exhaustion and other things, that ultras throw your way, are the main reasons that I enjoy them. There is nothing like crossing the finish line of an event where you had to push yourself beyond what even you thought was impossible. That feeling doesn't always manifest itself immediately but will appear in everything you do from that point forward. It certainly makes the more difficult things in life much easier to take. If you have any more specific questions or want any answers, just let me know. I will do my best". Later, Wash

Al, thanks for the update on Ted Corbitt - I was not aware. Sad news. His obit is on the NY Times website. Gilly has a great book about Ted if you need ultra training inspiration. Ted ran 300 mile weeks.

(Submitted December 19, 2007 09:59:43 by Al Cat)

Some of you may know that Ted Corbitt passed away last week. As you thing about 2008 I quote Ted from a 1998 book. 'Running is something you just do. You don't need a goal. You don't need a race. You don't need the hype of a so-called fitness craze. All you need is a cheap pair of shoes and some time. The rest will follow.' Rest in peace Ted.

Since the aches and pains of old(er) age are keeping from running as much, I've got nothing better to do than add to the add to the mass of stuff available for free on the Internet and call it self-publishing." Ta-da! Another blog! This one's called "Y42K?" (http://www.y42k.com) There'll be running stuff and other articles. Take a look. If you like what you see, drop by again, and let your friends know. If you don't like it, tell your enemies. And keep running!

It is a delight to see Aliza Lapierre's name at the top of the Stone Cat 50 mi results this year. This writer vividly remembers her sitting against a tree on the trail two years ago with a broken hip two miles before she was to finish the Stone Cat 50 miles. A couple of men were keeping her company while help came. Her rehabilitation was tracked in the GAC Bulletin Board for a while and it sounded slow and hard. And now she has brought herself back to national class! Sent on behalf of John Connell.

It was great seeing everybody last night at the store. I want to thank those people who carried me down to the basement so that I could visit for a while. I would have loved to have stayed longer but I ran out of steam. I'll see you all at the Christmas party where I hope to do the Electric Slide with my walker in tow. I also want to, once again, thank everybody for all of their help and kind thoughts. To use another corny movie quote, "You make me want to be a better person."

Hello Everyone, You have all been so wonderful in helping Jeff and I through this tough time and now we need a little more assistance. Our out of town help have all returned to their homes and we are in need of some helpers this week. Specifically we need help on Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday. Jeff has a rehab evaluation on Wednesday morning so we may learn when he can start outpatient rehab. Until then he will need some company so I can go to work. Again, this is all tentative based on his evaluation, they could start him this week. If anyone has some time to hang out please let me know. You can drop e-mail me at kinzuagal@aol.com or give me a call at 978-270- 1689. Paula

Jeff update: Scott and I stopped by to see Jeff and Paula last night. Melanie was there and has been a regular visitor to Jeff and Paula's household. Paula's friend Pete, a lady, is still in town from PA. She's been hanging with Jeff during the day for the past few weeks, keeping him on the straight and narrow regarding foot and arm positioning, medications, etc. Jeff did a bit of show and tell for us, walking around the house, putting weight on the weaker leg, bending it at the knee for a more natural walk, etc. He, not me, called this routine his 'stupid human tricks'. It also seems Jeff has been outside walking 'around the block'. For those who don't know their house, they have a horseshoe driveway. Jeff has been down the wheelchair ramp Gary put in, out the right side of the driveway, up the road and into the left side of the driveway and back up the ramp. Pretty cool.

Wanted to post a huge "THANK YOU" to the GAC for another great event. You really know how to put on a wonderful race. Couldn't ask for better volunteers, aid stations, or course markings. I've done a few other races this year, but none come close to the Stone Cat for hospitality or friendliness. Truly a top notch event. My only regrets are not taking a beer or Jack at Als. Oh well, maybe next year! Looking forward to kicking off 08 with a bang at the FA50k. Ron

Thanks GAC for a great event! The weather was perfect for a run in the woods. The aid stations were fantastic, good selection of eats and treats. It felt great to turn a corner and see one of those great big G.A.C. banners welcoming you to the aid station. Thanks to Al Cat, Freddie and their crew for their support and camaraderie. I love the technical shirt and finisher's jacket, I will get plenty of use out of them. I wish had had some extra time to visit Gilly's, it would be pretty cool to see some of that running memorabilia - next time. Cheers and thanks from Canada.

Thanks, GAC, for putting on another great pair of Stone Cat races. Gillie, thanks for the beer on Friday. Aid Station 1 - "Bartender!" - thanks for the Jack and cokes; they made all that running a bit more enjoyable. Washburn, I (and I'm sure many others in the VHTRC) have been following your recovery very closely. Your strength and determination are an inspiration. (Submitted November 12, 2007 09:32:12 by Ollie Holt)

Good morning GAC'er and congratulations on hosting another successful Stone Cat race. The last few weeks I have volunteered at the New England juniors' cross country races in Amherst NH. These races are held at Free Style Farm in Amherst. The owner of the farm graciously lets us use the horse riding trails for these races and we have total use of the facility including the machinery to grade and groom the trails. Yes we groom the trails for the kids and even blow all the leaves off the trails the night before the race. The reason I am sending this out is to get some feedback on a new Ultra idea. The owner of Free Style Farm enjoys letting us put on these events. I had been discussing with Wash before his illness the idea of putting on some type of Ultra at the farm and he had suggested that the fourth of July weekend would be a possible time because it would not impact the GAC 6 hour on Mother's Day or the Maine 50 miler on Memorial Day weekend. And an early July run would not impact VT 100. June 28 or July 5 would be possible choices. What I am thinking would be a 12 hour run on the 5K trail at the farm. It would have one aid station at the barn (VT 100 like) and the 5K has some good rolling hills but no rocks or roots. The concept would be an 8 pm (yes pm) start so you could see the 5K loop in the daylight and then finishing at 8 am. It would give you some good training for VT 100 with some night running but be on a course where you are unlikely to trip and hurt yourself before VT 100. You would also have horses all around you and you would smell horses all night again good preparation for VT 100. This would be rather low key with the one aid station. The course would allow you to also get to your cars relatively easy given that we only have 50 or so runners. Above that we would have to make other parking arrangements that would require a longer trip to the car. This is not official yet, I am just looking for comments and encouragement or discouragement for such a race. Please send me you comments, suggestions or what ever. Ollie

Deb! great to see you, and Melanie at the end and was hoping to see Jean! Karen: thanks for the TP and listening! some day I will make it for a GAC training or Fat Ass... and Gilley: saw the FULLER brothers yesterday and they say hello and they had much nicer things to say about you... I really wanted to quit after the marathon after all my falls but I thought how Wash would have liked to be out there also, so no stopping. Thanks for a great time!

When i last saw him the plan was that he'd travel for outpatient rehab but yesterday he said there will be some in home rehab too, so he won't have to travel every day. CW

No more picking on Gary in my presence! Gary is not feeling very well himself these days but he keeps plugging away and has orchestrated the changes necessary to accommodate the Wash when he comes home. As Deb said, the ramp is done and now he is working on the bathroom changes with Lipper. I really can't imagine how all this would have worked out without Gary. He may be growley and occasionally crude but he is a darn good man.

Jeff and I want to thank everyone for all the support, help, and well wishes from friends, family and a huge bunch of runners. We cannot express just how wonderful the GAC has been; there are not enough words. All the visits have been a boost in helping Jeff on the long road to getting better. He is getting a little more recovery and is learning to function without the help of his left arm and leg. As Deb (my trusty scribe) mentioned the plan is for him to be home by the end of the month then continue his rehab as an outpatient. Ladies, thank you for the par-tay…..now the whole world knows how old I am!

Hey GAC folks,The party for Paula was great (sorry I didn't have her out of the room like I said I would)In my defense I did keep her head turned the other way long enough for the blow up doll to make it in without her knowing.Jeff wished he could hang out longer but the long day got the best of him.We brought Jeff some of Paula's carrot cake the next day and he scarfed it down like he had never tasted food before. The Wash family thanks each and every one of you, and also wishes all of the other GACers who are going through crappy times,Best wishes, Get well soon, and we will see you at the next aid station. Thanks Erik"Little Wash"Washburn P.S. Extra thanks to Deb and Scott for the fishing gear, I realy needed the beach time. Erik

Hi All, Sorry to not update in a while. For those who do visit Jeff, please feel free to provide an update based on your visit. Here is what I know right now. Jeff is still in rehab. He'll be at his current location until the end of this month. He will be sent home for a week or so before going to a larger rehab facility for more intensive neurological therapy. A bunch of us went over Saturday night to surprise Paula and Jeff for Paula's 60th birthday. Jeff was working on a party for Paula before his stroke. We put the finishing touches on it and brought it to the facility. Jeff joined us for a bit but tires easily. Like he says, he's also overly stimulated right now with sights, sounds, tastes, etc. And, yes, Jeff still needs to wear his helmet as the section of skull is still removed. Also, with PT, Jeff was taken for a 'walk' supported by two therapists. He did show movement with his left hip. He also was able to do a bit of a shrug with his left shoulder. All good signs. Others with updates, please chime in.

Holy Moly, we go away on vacation for a couple of weeks and come back to find The Washman in extremis. Not that the whole world isn't already aware of his situation, but we will add something to the Nov issue of UltraRunning regarding his situation. We want to add a really nice photo as well, but so far we have a big problem as all the photos we can find look like Jeff. . . Jeff is one tough hombre, I know he'll be back out on the trail telling off-color stories before long. aloha, TJ

Jeff and family - was so sorry to hear about this serious "bump" in the road (trail) - I am thrilled to read about Jeff's recovery (poop and all!) - I venture to guess Jeff might start back with something "easy" (a not particularly mountainous 100!) and then be back climbing up and over rocks, roots, and who knows what else in a crazy one soon after! Jeff you have been a source of encouragement (I'd go so far as to say inspiration) ever since we first met (just after your Deca-Cent -sp?- was it '99 you did that?) Your calm, determined nature is really something to aspire to. When we do cross paths in events (odds are me catching up to you as you may have been having a slower/off day) your enthusiasm and stick-to-it-ness have helped me tremendously. It's pretty aweseome to bask in the GAC enthusiasm "spill over" running near Jeff in an event, too! I'm another person who thinks Jeff will run another ultra again before I do (I'm still focusing on raising crew!) but I look forward to sharing trails with you again! Oh, I forgot to say, Jeff you have such great priorities, too, for example your excitement at becoming a grandfather, and dedication to visiting family. Best wishes to you with recovery!

Myself, Gilly, Gary and Big Ed were up to see Wash on Friday. Fast Fred Messina was there when we got there checking out the scenery as usual. Wash is doing great. Jimmy and he went over some Stone Cat Stuff. Wash was cracking jokes along with all the raunchy ones we were all throwing around. Didn't seem to both Wash's Physical Therapist to much. She was helping Wash get out of bed into the chair. Wash wasn't listening to her at all, he was doing as he dam well pleased, that was one great sign. The other was when we were pumping him up letting him know just how the Club feels about him. We let him know that he's the #1 ultra runner in the Club and I mentioned that maybe Al was #2, maybe. Jeff got a twinkle in his eye when he talked about some of the "neat" stuff Al had done. My monies on Wash adding to his ultra resume in the near future. Hell we know he'll run another ultra before I do, the bastard. As Melanie mentioned he seems to like visitors. But we should respect the fact that he may need rest time, he's got lots going on. I'm sure you can just ask him how he's feeling when you show up, he'll let you know. Oh ya I almost forgot to up date everyone on Wash's vitals stats. Wash has taken a crap, Graig you can rest now, Wash said it wasn't anything great but better than nothing. All in all Wash is doing amazing.

I spent some time with Jeff and Paula over the last couple of days. They really appreciate the outpouring of good wishes from everyone...you should see the stack of cards that Paula is lugging around. You've already seen current condition updates (Craig really got the flavor across), so this note is just to let people know that Jeff is really enjoying receiving visitors. He's in a private room at the rehab center and the staff seems really easygoing about people wandering through. So feel free to drop in on him if you're in the area.

Jeff and family - I so wish we were closer to visit and hear you tell jokes . . . I am so happy to hear how well you are doing . . . no one doubts they'll be seeing you on the trails again just as fast as you're able! Our prayers and positive thoughts go out to you! Missy and Kurt Kelly

Saw Wash. this am at the Hunt Center- no one seemed to object that i was not there between 1 and 8. He looked great!( Well, as great as Wash can look ) Had a few complaints- had just gone thru the effort of getting up and working his way over to the portable shitter and all he could do was pass wind! Seemed he really wanted to shit! Said sleeping was a bitch- he can't get comfortable. Was moving around constantly while i was there. Also talked about being overwhelmed at times by sensory overload- watching TV or tasting things give him weird feelings- like he's learning them again. Ran into his case manager but she had yet to meet with him. i made a bunch of suggestions for distractions for him so the time would pass but he's not ready to try out much. Anyway, he's looking forward to the flood of folks who will start showing up. Pax, Craig

Jeff update: Jeff is at the rehab facility at the Hunt Medical Building (address below). His room is 212. Visiting hours are 1 - 8 but Paula says he's supposed to be kept busy with therapies in the early afternoon. Last night she noticed his leg was able to offer some push resistance. Progress continues.

Jeff Update: The ETA for Jeff to be at the New England Rehabilitation Hospital at the Hunt is 4 PM today, playoff traffic permitting. The address there is 75 Lindall Street, Danvers, MA 01923, phone: (978) 762-0679. It is a 20-bed facility located on the the 2nd floor of the Hunt Medical Building. Paula says Jeff will be very busy there with a rehab doc, medical doc, speech therapist, occupational therapist and physical therapist. I guess Jeff won't have time to play with the up and down mechanism on his bed.

Jeff update: If you are planning to go see Jeff, you should hold up. It turns out Jeff may be moved to an acute care residential facility in Danvers, MA, as early as tomorrow. The facility has a bed for him. They are just waiting on insurance approval. Paula talked with one of the doctors today who said they not doing much for Jeff medically now which makes him a candidate for the move to the Danvers facility. As for the test to see where the clots may have come from, they are not convinced what they saw with the heart was the source. They are also going to do some test to see if his blood has a clotting problem. The doc said they may never know the cause. Paula thought Jeff was a bit confused today. The doc was not overly concerned. The doc was very impressed with Jeff's progress and described it as nothing short of a miracle.

Jeff update: First off, Paula suggested talking to her around 8 pm was the best time for the updates. Jeff is so much more alert. They are spending the time with him and the docs. So best to wait until Paula is home or on the way home. Tonight Paula was driving so Erik gave the update. David headed home earlier today. Jeff had the swallowing test today. He drank barium or some other chaulky substance. Jeff passed the test with a score of 'good', not 'great'. The flap to keep fluid from entering his lungs didn't fire quick enough. What this means is he can drink thick fluids but not thin/watery fluids. So Jeff had a strawberry frappe. Yahoo! He also was able to swallow the video camera for the heart test. B ubbles passed from one side to the other in his heart. This could be a good indicator as to what caused the clot. Surgery would be in order to patch up the possible hole in the heart. There's more good news. They found Jeff a room on the neurology floor. He's out of ICU and he has a window. Woohoo! In addition to the thick liquids, he also can eat solid food. Erik said you should have seen the look on Jeff's face as he was eating a peach. I'm crying just writing these words. Erik called it a stupid grin. Visitors are welcome! Jeff also wanted Martha, Chris and Ed to hear his congratulations!!! What a great day!

I did a face plant tripping over a leaf I could hear your encouragement. You better get back on the trails soon or you'll start to look like Gilly knowing your appetite. Hang in there and welcome to the Ultrarunner-Brain Surgery Club, we're an elite group. Nice to have the company. You'll be back soon, just worry about getting to the next aid station before the cutoff and forget about the rest just like you do in most of the Ultras. Love ya. See you soon. Deb, thanks for the great updates.

Jeff update-- Lois and I snuk into see Jeff today (not and easy feat so, suggest you wait till he gets out of ICU) Jeff looks great. He was in a lounge chair next to his bed wearing a helmet adorned with stickers saying, "The Washman" in the front and "GAC" on the side. I think I should be wearing it instead of him. He is speaking slow but very understandable. He has not lost any of his wit or sense of humor. He has not gained movment to his left arm or leg. But knowing Jeff's tenacity it will come. The feeding tube still is a nusiance to him to the point that he keeps taking it out and he now has someone sitting with him to make sure he leaves it in. He keeps asking for a strawberry milkshake but he can't have one because they said icecream could go to his lungs and he could possible get pnuemonia. Anyone knowing Jeff knows that he can't sit still for long and it still holds true, he is going crazy and wants to get up and get out of there. Jeff will have a number of tests tomorrow to try and pinpoint the cause of the clots. Jeff definetly is being Jeff and that is good.

(Submitted September 30, 2007 16:36:55 by Art Hutchinson)

Jeff - Just learned of your health woes, and that means a whole bunch of serious prayer warriors have just been added to your case. If you apply even half the tenacity and good humor you did in helping me get through my first VT100, you'll do great. Hang in there, my friend!!!

Jeff update: Jeff is still in ICU but only because they are waiting for a bed to open up on the neurology floor. I had a chance to talk with him briefly on Paula's cell phone. He sounds good and is easy to understand. He's still being fed via the nose tube. Tomorrow he has a swallowing test. If all goes well with the test, he'll be eating solid food. Jeff is very hungry. He did get the catheter out so is mostly not hooked up to much. Paula said she had a long day at the hospital yesterday because Jeff was awake most of the time. This is very good. Jeff is getting stronger all the time.

Jeff update: Paula and family have been on a roller coaster ride today. They spoke to the neurology resident before going to Jeff's room. She seemed to offer more dire predictions regarding Jeff's long term recovery. Saying things like he may never regain the use of his left arm and leg. Also that it was too soon to tell about his vision but there would likely be a deficit on his left side. Jeff was still not doing too well with his swallowing. The resident said they'd wait over the weekend and look for permission to insert a feeding tube in his stomach on Monday. She also suggested that the feeding tube may be long term, e.g. forever. Jeff had a feeding tube in his nose yesterday. It was supposed to be a baby size tube but was adult/large size. It caused him enough discomfort that he pulled it out. I guess that was another reason the resident was saying they'd have to put a stomach tube in on Monday and would have to put the large tube back in through his nose for now and have to restrain him. However, when Paula, David and Eric got to the room, the baby size nose tube was in and Jeff was doing just fine and getting sustenance. Also in talking with the nurse who's been covering Jeff, the nurse seemed to be much more optimistic about his recovery based on what she has seen. Also the speech and swallowing PT seemed to think the swallowing will get better based on the progress they've seen so far. The resident did say they were going to put him in a room with a window so as to better regulate his sleep patterns since he seems to be a bit upside down with his timing. However, Paula didn't ask at the time if it meant a window in ICU or if he'd finally be getting out of ICU. Jeff had a bit of an arithymia last night. They are keeping a watch. It may be the meds. Also the ultrasound showed that the clots did not appear to come from his legs. Paula has been reading all the cards sent for Jeff. Jeff is very moved by all the love and concern he's getting from his extended family. Thank you!

My take is Wash will not be in ICU long. Once he can talk, he will talk their ear off and they will get him out of there as quickly as possible, and then out of then next area, and out of the next area, until he is back talking our ears off during a long run. Go Wash!

WOW--what a wild and crazy ride for Jeff, his family, and the extended family that ripples out from GACers to Happy Trails folks to C4Pers and beyond. I just learned of the recent events through the VHTRC website, and had to send my best wishes along.... Jeff may not recognize my name or face, but I sure know him because our paths have literally crossed dozens of times over the years, probably starting back in the early days of the Vermont 100 and carrying through to Bull Run this year. Whether pre-race, mid-event, or after it's done, Jeff always seems to be surrounded by others who take delight in sharing his generous spirit and love of the trail. We all look forward to seeing Wash back out there soon; in the meantime, we'll be thinking of him, sending positive energy his way, and reflecting on how lucky we all are as we venture out to our own favorite trails...

(Submitted September 27, 2007 13:32:23 by Debbie)

Update: Jeff will remain in ICU today. He continues to make progress, is sitting in a chair with his nifty helmet. The helmet, by the way, has begun to collect stickers. However, because of when the vent tube was in, his throat is sore and Jeff has difficulty swallowing. For this reason, he cannot eat solid food yet. So they are feeding him via a tube through his nose. He's not too happy about this but says "I need my nutrition." The docs are concerned that today he keeps nodding off. Paula thinks it is from all the meds they gave him yesterday to deal with the hiccups in prep for the MRI. Cardiology is still trying to pinpoint the cause of the clots. Once Jeff can swallow, he gets to swallow a camera for a "fantastic voyage". That ought to hold Jeff's interest. They are also going to ultrasound Jeff's legs to see if the clots may have come from there. Paula was saying that Jeff does mumble when he speaks. Since Eric works at a bar, Jeff says to get Eric to interpret. Another bit of progress is that Jeff showed more movement of his left arm and leg, his weakened side. Paula will update us with more news as it becomes available.

Great to read the update! Clearly since no one stepped up to direct Stone Cat, Wash was making one last effort to get out of it. Nice try and happy recovery!

Jeff and Paula, I'm not in regular contact with the GAC but clicked on the website to check out Stone Cat. I will always remember you guys giving me a ride down to Nipmuck a bunch of years ago. I was a total "newbie" and so grateful and impressed to have you "veterans" take me under your wing with your kind support and encouragement. My thoughts are with you and your family but I know you "Iron Will" people will come through this stronger than ever! Lisa Slack

Afternoon update: Jeff continues to be much more responsive. He's rolling around in the bed like a crazy man wanting to get out. Before they can let him out of bed and into a chair, he needs to be fitted for a helmet. They took measurements not too long ago so only a matter of time before he is more mobile, e.g. out of bed and into a chair. They are going to do an MRI to try to figure out where the clots came from. One minor complication to doing the MRI is that Jeff has been having hiccups right along. They had to give him a muscle relaxer to control the hiccups so they could do the MRI. Paula says he may even be out of ICU by tomorrow. She'll know more later.

Morning update: Paula talked to one of the nurses. Apparently, Jeff was giving them a hard time, at 4:30 AM no less, wanting to get up. They are going to try to put him in a chair this morning. Paula will send another update once she goes in at noon today. Progress continues!

Jeff, so glad to hear that you are on the trail to recovery, and are getting restless in the hospital. A ride to the woods is a great idea - tell the nurses it's time to start their training for Stone Cat! Best wishes and take care.

Well it seems your prayers circles, chants, positive vibes, etc. have been working. Paula says they had a very encouraging visit with Jeff. He was alert and able to communicate with yes/no answers since he is still intubated and restricted from speaking. Between Paula, David and Eric, they asked Jeff various questions, making jokes, etc. and Jeff responded accordingly. Apparently, he found humor in being bald like me and did a Jeff eye roll at the prayer circles (but don't stop!). He is kept sedated for periods of time to insure he gets the rest/recovery he needs. The docs told Paula they are astounded he is still alive given what they found with the 3 etc.. Paula asked Jeff if he was aware and clear on what the docs told him about what he's been through and Jeff said yes. They are doing more tests to see if his heart was the source of the clots. Jeff also wants them to look into the calf muscle pain he was having as another possible source. But I guess the heart is the typical source and most suspicious. Of course, now they also have to watch for infection with the open skull. At the moment it is a waiting game. Once Jeff leaves ICU, he'll be able to have visitors. Paula expects he'll be out of ICU in a couple days and will let us know. Paula, David, Eric and Jeff want to thank everyone, everyone for all your support. They are going back for another visit later this afternoon. I'll keep you posted if there is any new information.

I just talked to Paula. She's okay with me putting this on the board. When Paula, David and Eric went back to the hospital to hear the follow up to the tests they were basically presented with the following: Let Jeff 'go' meaning he would likely die from the fluid pressure building up on his brain or do another operation to cut a section out of his skull to allow the fluid to drain. They opted for the surgery which is where Jeff is right now. He should be out in the next hour or so. What they don't know is Jeff's quality of life following the surgery. But as Eric said Jeff will likely be happier with doing things "half ass" than not be here at all. I'll drink to that. I know we are all praying for Jeff's complete recovery.

Paula and Jeff's address is 330 High Road, Newbury, MA 01951. I talked to Paula earlier. They are running still more tests because of a shadow on the cat scans that may or may not be a bleed out. Please prayer it is not a bleed out. Paula, and their sons Eric and David, are heading back into Boston to Beth Israel. They were asked to return around noon when hopefully the docs would know more. Take care, Debbie

Great run Gary. 35 miles for a sick, dilapidated, old fart with no knees ain't too bad. You need to find a 100 miler where you can sign up the day of the race. You seem to do better that way.

(Submitted September 13, 2007 11:55:22 by darlene)

I think it takes just as much if not MORE courage to go to the starting line of some of these races than it does to cross the finish line...GREAT JOB GARY!!!

(Submitted September 6, 2007 09:44:36 by Wash)

Chris Scott's new race that takes the place of the C4P is set for next year. Here is an excerp from the email that I got. I will leave a copy of it at the store next Thursday if you are interested. "2008’s official inaugural event will be March 21-23, with a couple planned unique features. Obviously, as a full moon weekend, at least for the slow and middle packers, runners will see two full moons. Starts will be staggered toward the calculation that everyone will finish within a four hour window of 8:00 AM Sunday morning. With a 40 hour time limit, the first batch of runners will start at 4:00 PM Friday afternoon, and perhaps the fastest runners not leaving until 8:00 AM Saturday, with batches in between leaving on 3-4 hour intervals. The staggered start intends that as the race progresses, especially on a course with so many out and back (down and up) side trails, instead of spending the final miles somewhat alone (as with normal 100’s), runners will pick up increasing numbers of compatriots along the way. And with this aggregation of runners in the final hours, the pacer policy flip flops from the norm, too – pacers will only be permitted through the first moon, more to assist in navigating during those lonelier early miles."

My name is Joe and I was a runner at this past weekend's VT100. I'm not a member of your club (I live in NJ) but I had the pleasure to run with one of your members - Lois - for nearly 50 miles. During the times I ran with Lois, her family, and other members and friends of your club were very supportive of me as well, cheering, offering encouragement, food, etc. I joked with Lois that she must be a celebrity because of all the support she had. I think that really speaks volumes for the type of running club you have - you're first class all the way!

My friend Cindy Goh from the C4P wanted me to send this on to the club: Good to see you at VT. It was a wonderful day for me to have completed my first 100 miler. But having your GAC people cheering me on was most motivating. Can you forward this to Gilly for me? I had no crew for the first aid station as my crew missed me by being late. There was Gilly and crew attempting to help me and at Stage Road by first killing a bug, sucking the living daylights out of me, and then cheering me on. Thank you guys and dolls. You made my race happen! Go-go

I am planning to step down as the director of the Stone Cat Races and am looking for someone to take my place. I will still mark the trail and do the PR but I think somebody else could make this race into something special. I need someone to take over the adminstration side of the race: ie. figuring out what to give the runners for signing up and for finishing, soliciting sponsors and race schwag, etc. See me Tuesday at the track or contact me at thewashman@aol.com if you are interested. I will do everything I can to make the transition easy.

Thanks everybody. I actually had a crappy run but, the conditions were so good, I actually beat my last two Bull Run Runs by more than 15 minutes. I even had ice cream on the way out and on the way back but I left the Tequilla to the others. We certainly had better weather than the marathon sloggers. Great job to all who persevered.

Folks - no longer enter your email address - I ignore it anyway - instead enter the nickname of our coach - the five letter version - in the email address field - lets see if that works.

Thank you to all the Hyannis Half-Marathoners who stayed around in the cold to support those of us who were silly enough to go around again... and to Jean and Jim for coming down to support us all - you guys ROCK!

Inov-8 is having a special promotion for running clubs, starting with the GAC. I left a flier at the store with the prices of their trail shoes. If you are interested, you can check it out there.

Keep in mind that, if you can do Bull Run in 10 hours, it will most likely take you 14 to do 50 miles at Wapack. The End-to-end-to-end will take most people nearly 12 hours. It took me longer to do the end-to-end (22 miles) than it did to run Nipmuck (26.2 miles).

(Submitted December 8, 2006 09:32:26 by Here's an option)

Check out the calendar of events in Ultrarunning magazine - Wapack 50-miler, first annual. Kick all the rocks you want to, locally. Not sure if it conflicts with Mother's Day - if so, what were they thinking?

There are some great pictures of the Andover XC race on Cool Running, including one of young Tim Martell sprinting away from the Rogers near the finish line. It will take a while to browse through them all though.

James, VT100 is exactly the same as Stonecat. Except for the heat, the humidity, the mud, the hills, the jeep roads, and running through the night. And the horses, don't forget the horses.

(Submitted November 19, 2006 21:52:36 by James Duade)

Hey All, I ran Stonecat a few weeks ago, and I loved it so much, that I figured I'd try to run the Vermont 100 this summer. I know a bunch of people from the club have done this race in the past and I was wondering how the stone cat course compares to the Vermont 100 course. Should I expect the same difficulty level in trails? Also, I was hoping to maybe volunteer at one of your events in 2007. Who should I talk to about that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for putting on a great race, and I look forward to seeing you guys soon. I can be reached by e-mail at jduade@gmail.com

We are back from Oklahoma City it was quite the event. The Run was something I will always remember I missed not having more GAC people there but the runners, townspeople, and most important the crew that where along the coarse following there runner helped get us through.
